Guarding the Mission

This week's passage: 1 Timothy 2:1-15

We continued in 1 Timothy this Sunday. Chapter 2. Three movements.

First, concern for outreach. Paul says pray for all people — even kings and rulers. Not because they deserve it, but because a church shaped by fear and resentment can’t bear faithful witness. God desires all people to be saved. The church isn’t the gatekeeper. It’s the witness.

Second, order in the assembly. The gathering in Ephesus was chaotic. Men quarreling. Teaching being grabbed instead of guarded. Paul slows everything down — not to silence anyone, but to protect formation. Teaching is a trust, not a platform. Authority is shaped over time, not seized.

Third, we spent time with the difficult verses about women and teaching. We looked at the context, asked what Paul was actually addressing, and held it up against the rest of Scripture — Priscilla, Phoebe, Junia, Anna, Philip’s daughters. The question Paul asks isn’t “Who wants to teach?” It’s “Who is ready to handle the Word without getting in its way?”

Something to sit with this week:

Where has your focus drifted from the mission? What would it look like to get back to the plot?
